Task: Design the shell of the time capsule (Continuation of Time Capsule-I).

Recap:

Looking at the kinds of objects I had collected to keep inside of my Time Capsule, I realised that the common elements in all four articles were things to do with routine, daily life, time, calendar. All 4 articles have been an integral part of my life for several years.

Look Again:

To think of it….2 of my articles are things that I constructed; the phone stand and the zines. Past few years I have been exploring different ways of constructing a Zine. I wanted to bring the qualities of a Zine into the construction of my Time Capsule: easily foldable, easy to carry, include my illustrations.

Construction:

I used a rough office paper to work out the construction of the Time Capsule. I used 4 sheets of paper that I then cut into squares and folded the squares further to construct boxes.

The 4 boxes were then stuck to each other from one side each. The construction had to provide 4 slots for each article.

Why the color:

I illustrated the 4 phases of a day, by depicting them through the color of the light. Hence the color of the walls changes along with the light outside the window and the calendar on the wall. The calendar was again an element brought in from the Time Capsule- I, used in the animation for ‘Cup,Plate, Bowl, Spoon’ video. This element was congruent to my idea of showing routine.

Final, never final:

I printed the illustration on regular paper due to the lack of options at the print shop. But I would prefer printing it on a thicker gsm for a more sturdy prototype. The paper could be similar to the ones used in calendar makings as well, since the illustration colors would also pop out more.

I see paper as a material that would either blow up in the future for its flexibility in construction and it’s temporary permanence or it would entirely stop to exist, considering books and art are moving towards digital mediums. (I also suspect if we would have enough trees left to make paper… )

Whichever way, it’s my chosen material for my prototype for the reason that it can be easily folded and carried. And since I have moved at least 15 times in the past 5 years, I keep only things that could be easily carried around (no trucks required).

(How to fold the House/ Time Capsule)

My Time Capsule looks like a house, divided in the four phases of a day and hence life. This concept of time works well with the idea for a shell of a Time capsule.

In the future, the Time Capsule is imagined to be found between books or between old grocery bills ideally, since grocery bills are another routine, mundane element found inside a house.
